The large numbers of non permitted ADUs in Marin present many risks to both the occupants and the property owners. Getting these units properly permitted is now possible through new California ADU law, but it can be a bit complex.
Property owners must provide drawings to their local jurisdiction and apply as if they were building a new ADU. For such plans to be approved, life safety code-related issues may first need to be addressed.
